The rise of online entrepreneurs in Zimbabwe

It has taken a long time for people to warm up to the idea but online entrepreneurship is on the rise in Zimbabwe. More and more people are joining the bandwagon. I guess the current situation with the worldwide pandemic has forced people to get into it.

I have been preaching the online marketing gospel for a number of years now and though a number of people have joined over the years, many others associated online marketing with the word SCAM! In this article, I am going to talk about the rise of entrepreneurship in Zimbabwe and what the future holds for this market.

The growth of Online Marketing and Ecommerce

To get a good understanding of the impact of online entrepreneurship in Zimbabwe, we need o look at it from a global perspective. With the way the world has become a global village, what happens in the west is usually a precursor of what’s to come.

The richest man in the world currently, runs a company that has put many traditional brick and mortar businesses out of commission. Amazon has brought so much convenience to people that many in the first world don’t see the need to go out to the shops now except if they need something immediately.

Another thing that Amazon has done is that it has helped people trust online purchases. It’s now easier for people to buy things online because it has become a normal way of life.

How has this impacted Zimbabwe though, you may ask? Well, there are a number of ways it has done that and we will get into that very soon. First, let’s look at the current state of affairs in our local market.

A large percentage of businesses have gone online. Banks have gone digital, physical stores have opened online shops and now delivery services are the norm in Zimbabwe. What does this all mean in the grander scheme of things?

It simply means that if you are not looking to take advantage of the online space then get ready for your business to die.

What is causing many people in Zimbabwe to look for online opportunities?

A lot of Zimbabweans have come to the realization that they cannot depend on the local economy anymore. We have put through a roller coaster for almost 20 years now and most people are now looking elsewhere in order to get some form of stability.

The online world gives people the ability to earn in forex thereby cushioning them against the volatility that prevails in the Zimbabwean market. The sharp drop in job opportunities is also another huge factor.

For people like me, the online entrepreneurship route gives me an avenue to build the lifestyle that I want on my own terms.

How Zimbabweans are making money online

I think that as Zimbabweans we are somewhat at an advantage when compared to other nations on the African continent. The vast majority of our populace is well educated and has a culture of education.

This means that we are well able to learn any new skills that we might need in order to get where we want to. A lot of people have gotten onboard and are earning money online after educating themselves on what needs o be done.

Here is a list of some of the ways in which people are earning money online:

  • Social Media Management
  • Article Writing/ Copywriting
  • Transcription
  • Forex Trading
  • Ecommerce
  • Print on Demand
  • Drop Shipping
  • Amazon FBA
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Consulting
  • Coaching
  • Freelancing
  • Tutoring

These are just a tip of the ice burg and Zimbabweans are taking advantage of all of these. I know at least one person in all of those categories.

The best way to avoid online scams

Now, let’s talk about online scams so that we at least remove this as one of the excuses you are not taking advantage of the online world. I will share a few rules of thumb as far as recognizing an online scam is concerned.

I will only talk about two pointers that will help protect you.

  1. Too good to be true

Does something look too good to be true? In most cases it is. Now, there are a few opportunities that do come along that are legit but look like they are too good on the surface.

These, however, are few and far between. Learn to make decisions based on logic and not emotion. If it’s too flashy or promises overnight riches, stay away from it!

  1. Do your research

Do some background research on any opportunity you are thinking of getting in to. You will most likely find information that will help you make a decision. In the same light, also realize that not everything you see online is necessarily true.

Look through a number of resources before making a final decision.

Conclusion

Online entrepreneurship is growing and is set to grow even further in the Zimbabwean market. There is a big cake and you can take a slice from it. The ball is in your court.

  1. Hey Kuda. Nice post. I believe Zimbas have a education problem. Not that they are too educated, but that they are educated in the wrong things. I met a 45 year old man doing a degree in one thing or the other one day. I asked him what he hopped to achieve. He said he wanted to find a better job? At 45? Or 50? Or even 40? Well, possibly, but the challenge is that our education system teaches us to become employees and not employers.

The issue extends to the online thing. I have met people with masters in IT, yet they don’t know that it’s possible to make a living online. I make a living online and I only studied English. Our universities are letting the country down. They churn out unqualified, uncreative graduates on a yearly basis. To do what? To look for jobs? There are no jobs around anywhere in the world!

Anyway, it’s a subject on which I am a bit too passionate (smiley). If you want to link, sent and email at admi@networkbees.com. I monetize via Google Ads. I notice that you don’t have that, or do you? It’s peanuts but it can be useful peanuts if you can get 1000 visitors per day

    1. Indeed thanks for the feedback. The world is changing the way people do business and how they earn money. There is also a generation gap as well. I am sure our kids will have more understanding of the online world and will be able to make money from home. As it stands in Zimbabwe more and more people are becoming jobless its the best time to find people who are doing something online. Great website I saw a lot of blog posts on your site. ANd yes definitely I need the google ads. I have been working on the free traffic methods only
